Frequently asked questions
Can you freeze apple crumble?
Yes, it can be frozen. Allow the filling to cool, top with your crumble topping, wrap well and freeze for up to 3 months. Defrost overnight then bake.
What apples should you use in apple crumble?
Bramley apples give the best results for a crumble due to their tart flavour which balances out the sweetness in a crumble. Their texture will also give a very soft and fluffy texture. You can use eating apples, rather than Bramley, for this recipe. However, reduce the amount of sugar used as they are naturally sweeter. They will hold their shape more than a Bramley apple and won’t break down as much, so you will have more distinct pieces.
PEELING APPLES
If you do this with a knife rather than a peeler, it is easier to cut them into quarters first. Alternatively, for a more rustic effect, leave the apples unpeeled.
MAKE IT YOUR OWN
If you make apple crumble all the time, you may feel like varying it.
– Mix ½ tsp mixed spice, cinnamon or allspice, or the scraped seeds of half a vanilla pod, into the sugar when tossing apples
– Add a handful of blackberries to the apples
