Eggs in a Basket

If you’re looking for fun ways to present food to your kids, these eggs in a basket are a quick and easy recipe that is both cute and nutritious. Eggs are a wonderful way of feeding your family, and because they’re so nutrient-dense your little ones will have a great source of protein and fats even if they eat just one of our nests. Serve them with a homemade parfait made from layers of greek yogurt, granola, and fruit and it’s all that you need to start your day.

The recipe is easy enough that your kids can help you in the kitchen. You just need 5 minutes to have breakfast ready for the whole family.

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. Use a cookie cutter to cut out your favorite shape in the center of each piece of bread.

  3. Butter 1 side of each piece of bread, including the cutout pieces, with the remaining butter.

  4. Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat and melt 1 teaspoon of butter in the pan.

  5. Place the bread on the griddle with the butter-side down.

  6. Break 1 egg into a small dish and gently slide it into the hole in the bread.

  7. If the pan is big enough to cook both at the same time, repeat the process with the remaining egg and bread slice.

  8. Cook until the egg is golden on the bottom, 1 to 2 minutes.

  9. Gently flip to cook on the other side, about 1 minute. Place on serving plate and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

  10. Toast the cutout pieces on both sides, approximately 1 minute per side.

  11. Serve the toast immediately and decorate with the cutout pieces.

More Nested Eggs

Try these other “nests” to make wonderful egg presentations:

  • Scooped Bagels: Scoop the dough out of your favorite bagel, beat two eggs, and fill each scooped bagel half with eggs. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and bake at 350 F for 10 minutes. Serve with mixed greens and salad dressing.
  • Puff Pastry Squares: Cut puff pastry squares and place them in a greased muffin tin. Bake at 350 F for 8 minutes with baking beads on top to avoid puffing. Remove from oven and crack an egg into each nest, then sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake for an extra 7 minutes and decorate with chopped chives. Serve with fruit salad.
  • Stuffed Baguettes: Cut a baguette in thick slices just thin enough that they can stand on their sides on a baking pan. Using your fingers press the dough against the crust to make a nest. Put the slices of baguette on a greased baking pan and crack an egg into each one. Sprinkle with truffle salt and drizzle with olive oil. Bake at 350 F for 10 minutes. Serve with hash browns.
  • Baked Avocados: Pit one large avocado and crack two quail eggs in each half. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and pepper flakes. Bake at 350 F for 10 minutes and decorate with chopped cilantro. Serve with warm corn tortillas.
