What is a burger without all the toppings? I remember the days of being a child and wanting my pizzas, hot dogs, and burgers as plain as possible. I even went as far as refusing to eat delicious looking hamburgers if they were too close to the ketchup bottle. It’s a phase I think most children go through. However, as we grow up and our tastes become more refined, fresh vegetables and condiments become a necessity for a great burger.
Instead of the regular sauces that adorn a burger, I thought it would be fun to create my own special sauce much like the fast food chains, like McDonald’s Big Mac, but way more healthy for you. Thus, the Keto burger sauce was born. It is a simple mix, but it is Keto-friendly and delicious enough to put on everything.
Sourcing or Making a Keto Mayo?
Mayonnaise as traditionally produced fits well inside the parameters of maintaining your Keto diet. A simple recipe requires no more than egg yolks and an oil – usually an olive oil.
However, there is the issue of processed foods. Mass produced mayo brands that you will typically come upon in restaurants, or the grocery store can be packed full of sugar which makes it carb-heavy. If sourcing a store-bought mayo, look closely at the nutritional stats as well as the ingredients.
What we would recommend is making mayo at home. This way you can control what is added and not have to concern yourself with preservatives and added sugar. Check out this recipe for some simple tips on making the perfect Keto mayo.
Make Your Sauce Special To You
I mentioned the most famous special sauce in the world earlier, that of the Big Mac. Truth is, the McDonald’s special sauce is not that big of a secret, it’s essentially just thousand island dressing. A thousand islands makes for a great condiment because it already includes many of the main condiments that are popular for a burger, plus a few other ingredients.
With the basic recipe we have provided, there are a few other Keto-friendly ingredients that you can add to make it closer to the fan favorite sauce:
- Minced onion
- Minced garlic
- Minced olives
- Olive brine
- Black pepper
- Fresh herbs
Add a special sauce to jazz up your next Keto burger.
Mix together all the ingredients with a small spoon.
